Join us in Glorantha, Greg Stafford’s classic fantasy world of richly imagined cultures, ferocious combat, and colliding mythologies.
Create your group’s unique Gloranthan campaign using 13th Age: the d20-rolling game of heroic fantasy, escalating combat, One Unique Things, and limb-ripping owlbears!
For Game Masters, 13th Age Glorantha includes:
. More than 80 pages of monsters and enemies fully compatible with any 13th Age campaign, including Chaos priests, dragonsnails, scorpionmen, Crater Makers who call down the Moon, and the awesome Chaos demon known as the Crimson Bat.
. More than 60 pages of ready-to-run adventures and heroquests—venture into myth to refight the battles of the gods and gain their cosmic powers!
. A distinctive setting that will entertain longtime fans but is aimed at gamers who’ve never heard of Glorantha.
If you’re a 13th Age player you’ll find:
. 5 new classes, including the hell mother who summons Darkness spirits and giant spiders; the swordmaster Humakti who wields Death; and the trickster who (in theory!) funnels your bad luck onto your enemies.
. 5 new class variants, including the wind lord, a fighter with magical storm-related exploits; and the rebel, a rogue with the supernatural ability to get where he’s not supposed to be.
. 2 new PC races, the trolls and ducks, plus Gloranthan humans with new cultural traits.
Note: 13th Age core rules required to play
The Glorantha Sourcebook is an essential resource for Greg Stafford’s world of Glorantha, one of the most extensively developed and renowned fantasy settings of all time. A world of mythology, gods, and heroes, Glorantha has inspired roleplaying games, board games, computer games, comics, fiction, and more, a setting beloved and revered worldwide.
An invaluable resource for gamemasters, players, and readers of fantasy worlds, this sourcebook is gorgeously illustrated and filled with informative maps and diagrams. Drawn from a variety of out-of-print and rare sources, this material has been dramatically revised, updated, and expanded. Alongside this foundational material are new essays, insights, and extrapolations on the world and its incredible denizens.
Inside this sourcebook, you’ll learn about the creation of the world; the main ages of its past; the history of Dragon Pass and its people; the pantheons of the gods, including the Lightbringer and Lunar pantheons; the Coming of Argrath; Elder Races such as the Elves, Dragonewts, Dwarves, and Trolls; genealogies of the major royal dynasties; legends and lore of the various tribes and peoples inhabiting Glorantha; the
fundaments of Gloranthan magic and the Runes that shape the world; the history and gods of the mighty Lunar Empire; and finally, the Hero Wars!
This systemless sourcebook can be used to enhance and support any fantasy roleplaying game of your choosing, including RuneQuest, HeroQuest, and 13th Age Glorantha, and others.
So, that’s it. 449 pages of RuneQuest and Gloranthan goodies.
What did I think if it? I actually liked it, in fact I like it better than I thought I would. This is the first edition that I would seriously think of using instead of RQ3.
The artwork is stupendously good. Normally, I flick over the artwork as inconsequential, but this is atmospheric and evocative. I could relate to all the artwork and place it in Glorantha. The maps are OK, but nowhere near as good as the illustrations.
Whilst the layout, in general is good, there were some sections that were confusing, with headings that seemed to flow from previous ones and confused me when reading. The Appendix should be surgically removed, reformatted and made available as a download. There were inconsistencies, with Species Maximum Characteristics calculated and used in two different ways. Training was inconsistent with its “No training for skills above 75%, except for those where it is allowed”. That either shows a lack of care, or, I would expect, people going word-blind after checking everything.
The rules are generally very good and, dare I say it, better than RQ3. They are what RQ2 moving to RQ3 should have been.
Do I love the Character Generation? Yes, the way of working out a Grandparent/Parent’s life fixes the Adventurer into Glorantha. Homelands seem to work OK, as do Professions. Rolling Characteristics gives a number of options to not roll up someone unplayable.
Do I love the Skills? No, having seen what Revolution is doing, I would never go back to RQG’s style of skills, I prefer a short list of Skills and traits hanging off them. But, they work as skills, in a very general way.
Do I love the Magic? Yes, actually. Spirit Magic would be better named Common Magic, but I can see why they didn’t. The way Spirit Magic works is nice and easy. Rune Magic is vastly improved, from systems that were not broken anyway. It is bedded nicely into Glorantha.
Sorcery looks better, but I probably wouldn’t play a Sorcerer, so it’s hard to say. Enchantments are good, missing some things from RQ3, but they are easy to put back in.
Do I love the Game System? Well, it’s OK, it has kept enough RQ3 to make me happy but has left some old rubbish in there as well.
What do I particularly like about RQG? The artwork, passions, reputation, rune points, shamans, boosting spells based on time/place and runes.
There was big news at Gen Con! We are very pleased to announce our continued exploration of Appendix N works using DCC RPG rules: Jack Vance’s Dying Earth! Jobe Bittman is already hard at work writing and play testing material for a release in late 2017. Like DCC Lankhmar, DCC Dying Earth will be both a setting and a rules supplement.
Furthermore, of perhaps greater excitement, is a new game using the same chasis called Through Sunken Lands and Other Adventures. This will be a sizeable book and will give the BtW style look at Sword and Sorcery fiction in the style of Howard, Moorcock, and Leiber. This book is well more than 90% drafted and ready for playtest. In fact, we have playtesters on the hook but are woefully behind schedule on finishing the last bits.
